Should You Reduce Your Carbohydrates To Lose Weight?

I remember back in the 80's the rage was the high-carb diets going on across the nation. The idea was to keep our dietary fats low and complex carbohydrates high along with adequate amounts of protein. Over time, the high-carb diet fell out of favor. Then the low-carb eating and higher protein intake became the vogue diet.

The way it looks out there right now, is we have more low-carb choices than we can count, yet we have an obesity rate higher than ever in the country. Why you may ask? It never was about the carbs, it is about the amount of calories that created this problem - along with the quality and quantity of selections.

We have learned over the years to avoid transfats and steer toward monounsaturated sources, we need to look at carbs the same way. There is a big difference between carbs found in cookies and candy, as opposed to whole grains and fruits.

I'm sure that you take nutrition seriously, so you must keep track of the amount of calories you are consuming and where they come from. Our carbohydrates should amount to 40% to 60% of our total calorie intake. Your choices should include fruits, vegetables and whole grains, spaced throughout the day for a steady supply of energy.

Carbs provide us with the very important energy we need when we workout. If you have more energy you can work out harder and burn more calories. Burn more calories and lose more fat.

So getting back to the main question. Should you reduce your carb intake to lose weight? The best suggestion I can give you is to lose body fat is by calorie control and a balanced diet with regular exercise. Try to lose 1-2lbs per week; because more than this is most likely water or muscle.
